Correggio and Parmigianino. Art in Parma in the sixteenth century

The exhibition “Correggio and Parmigianino. Art in Parma in the sixteenth century”, to be held in Rome at the Scuderie del Quirinale from February to June 2016, will present to the public the extraordinary art season Parma in the first half of the sixteenth century.

That golden age, in which the great Italian Renaissance art was not limited exclusively to large towns such as Florence, Milan, Venice and Rome, is due largely to its protagonists, Correggio (1489-1534) and Parmigianino (1503-1540).
Correggio traveled to Parma at peak of his career and then spent there the rest of his life: the exhibition will present not only a selection of masterpieces that show the emotional charge and the range of feelings expressed by Correggio painter of religious images, but also his works on mythological subjects, which had an enormous influence on later artists.
Parmigianino career took place mainly between Rome and Bologna: in the exhibition will be presented religious works and mythological and dramatic results in the portrait.

Thanks to a carefully selection, the radically different approach of the two masters to drawing will be apparent: the basically functional practice by Correggio will turn to the more rich and varied production by Parmigianino.

In addition to Correggio and Parmigianino, the exhibition will also introduce other four other artists of the so-called “School of Parma”: Michelangelo Anselmi, Francesco Maria Rondani, Girolamo Mazzola Bedoli and Giorgio Gandini del Grano.
One of the most remarkable effects of the presence of Correggio and Parmigianino in Parma was infact the rising of a circle of students and disciples.

The exhibition will be curated by Professor Ekserdjian, who has dedicated many years to the study of the School of Parma and has made numerous valuable publications.
